Top Couch Co-op Shooters for Xbox One

One genre that lends itself exceptionally well to the couch co-op experience are First-Person Shooters. Being able to coordinate attacks, call out valuable points of interests and share (or steal) ammo and pick-ups are much easier when you’ve got your teammate sitting right next to you. Perhaps it’s due to the numerous hours I spent participating in LAN parties with family and friends over Halo 2 and Gears of War, but whenever I find a stellar shooter with couch co-op enabled, I can’t wait to share it with the crew.

Considering I’ve always been a fan of the FPS genre, I’ve always tried to get the P.I.C to try out a variety of shooters. Below I’ve compiled a list of my personal favorite shooters available on the Xbox One, as well as the reasons why I’d heartily recommend any of these titles for my Bros. While all of the below titles are shooters at their core, some are focused on loot, bro-tastic action or just a classic FPS experience. Without further ado, let’s get to the list of my top couch co-op shooters for Xbox One.

Borderlands: The Handsome Collection-shooting for loot!

The Borderlands series has a lot going for it-quick and precise gunplay, a wide variety of weapons, a unique look, a humorous narrative, RPG elements which allow for character customization-but the one thing that sets it apart from other shooters is the focus on loot. Every time you drop a boss, there’s a potential to find a new weapon which blows away everything in your arsenal. While loot-driven gameplay is a staple of co-op games such as MMO’s and the Diablo series, this is largely absent from most FPS titles-except Borderlands. This makes it a fantastic co-op focused title, and the ability to mix and match character classes means the replay value is incredibly high. Plus-two games for the price of one? That’s what I call a steal!

Gears of War: Ultimate Edition-the Bro bible!

When Gears of War first launched in the halcyon days of the Xbox 360, the cover-based gameplay was revolutionary. The easily comprehendible story and tight gunplay aged well and lent itself perfectly to a re-mastered edition. Now the signature atmosphere of the title looks better than ever and the game which defines the very concept of being a “Bro” is now available for a whole new generation of gamers to experience. Although the language and graphical content is decidedly mature, if you’re interested in one of the best couch co-op experiences, you can do much worse than Gears.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection-the games which defined a generation!

The Halo franchise is synonymous with the FPS genre. While Doom may have helped to define shooters, Halo helped popularize the genre for a whole new generation of gamers. The precise gameplay and futuristic setting laid the foundation for many popular shooter franchises. Not to mention, Halo is the series which helped define the couch co-op shooter experience for myself, and I’m sure millions of other Bros as well. The influence of the series is undeniable, and while each of the titles may not have aged like wine, the value offered by the MCC is too good to pass up. Whether you’re a long-time fan of the series or are just interested in what all the fuss is about, the MCC is a package no gamer on Xbox One should pass up. Four-count ‘em, four-full campaigns for the price of one? What are you waiting for? JUMP ON IT!

Plants vs Zombies: Garden Warfare 2

Admittedly, I’ve only been playing this title for the past two days. However, in that small amount of time, PvZ 2 has  quickly become my go-to title. Whenever I opt to do my first 24 hour Twitch Broadcast in support of St. Jude, PvZ 2 will be a strong contender for my game of choice. The visuals pop off the screen, the music is some of the catchiest elevator-type music I’ve heard in a long time, and both armies contain a wealth of character types. With both cooperative and competitve taps and some very unique maps, the action in this family-friendly title (and truth be told, this is probably the only family-friendly title on this entire list) is fast and frantic. Numerous unlockables and upgrades mean this title is going to keep me occupied for a looooooong time.

Star Wars Battlefront-the ultimate fan dream!

I’d bet the game I’ve played more than any other in my life is Star Wars Battlefront II for PS2. Not only did I max all my classes out on my initial playthrough, I went through the entire process again on PS3. Needless to say, I was ecstatic when the new Battlefront was announced. Although I lamented the loss of a traditional campaign, the gameplay is as polished as the good folks over at DICE can deliver. Whether you’re teaming with a hardcore shooter fan or just someone who loves Star Wars, the combination of fan-service and precise gameplay makes Battlefront a series pretty much any NerdLife enthusiast can appreciate.

If you’ve ever hopped in one of the TruBros Twitch broadcasts, you know I’m all about that couch co-op life…although occasionally I do go on Fallout binges (for good reason!). Shooters are a fantastic choice for couch co-op gaming, and these are some of the titles the crew and I pick up on a regular basis. If you’re gaming on the Xbone I recommend picking up at least one of these if you’re on the market for a solid shooter. Until next time, Bros!
