WHAT UP INTERNET?!
The holiday season is upon us, Bros. So what does that mean? It means you’ve got to spend some time thinking of what you’re going to get that special someone in your life-whether it be your partner in crime, your parents and siblings, or the one clan member you can always count on to fire up their box when you’re in need of a final team member. As a self-proclaimed connoisseur of all things #NerdLife, I’ve spent countless hours combing over kiosks (see: #SDCC exhibition hall vendor booths) and perusing the internet to find the perfect gifts for friends, family, loved ones and Bros. All my gifts can be divided up into three categories: games, clothes and toys (because this bro is an adult!). Since it is crunch time for all those you’re shopping for, here’s the TruBros #NerdLife Holiday Shopping Guide for 2015!
Fallout 4 (scope the review!)
If you’ve got a gamer on your list that enjoys a FPS centered around an immersive world, multiple intriguing storylines and doesn’t mind spending a lot of time into a title with no multiplayer, look no further than this Bro’s game of the year, Fallout 4. Every gamer has a different experience with a Fallout title, and this is easily the most expansive and polished entry in the series to date.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom pain (scope the review!)
The Metal Gear franchise has a famously convoluted story-thankfully it’s streamlined and easy-to-understand in The Phantom Pain. Couple this with the series’ trademark tactical espionage action and multiple side missions which give the series the open-world feel gamers didn’t know it desperately needed, and you’ve got another title worthy of your attention. If you’ve got a gamer on your list who likes third person action, wants to be in complete control of the way they tackle tasks and doesn’t mind a complex (albeit easy to understand) story, look no further than this title.
Star Wars Battlefront (scope the beta impressions!)
Got someone on your list who enjoys FPS’ and is a diehard Star Wars fanatic? Every reader of this blog has at least one person on their list that fits this description. While the full title isn’t the deepest game available on the market, the gorgeous aesthetics alone are enough to draw in any would-be Jedi. With tight gameplay and a presentation worthy of the series’ moniker, Battlefront is a title even the most casual of FPS players who love Star Wars should check out.
Destiny: The Taken King – Legendary Edition (scope the Taken King review!)
If you didn’t get around to picking up Destiny during its first year, you’re in for a great deal of value when it comes to picking up this package which includes the base game and all of the expansions released within the first year. With some of the slickest gameplay ever tied to a shooter, a wide variety of guns and (finally!) a story that’s interesting, Destiny is a title any gamer worth their salt should check out. Plus, it’s got heavy co-op elements-great for you and your partner-in-crime! (disclaimer: She got Gally the first time we did the Vault of Glass. I bought mine from Xur when he sold it right before TTK came out…and then got it two days later in the Weekly Nightfall Strike)
Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate
The Assassin’s Creed series is divisive-yearly iterations means some have grown weary of the series, however this year’s entry is a culmination of everything the series has done right thus far. A sprawling urban backdrop, characters which (for once) are unique and engaging and polished gameplay means if you’ve distanced yourself from the series recently, now’s the time to get back into it. Have a gamer on your list that’s a bit of a historian and likes to traverse rooftops to assassinate targets? Well…I don’t know if you should, but if you do, this is the title for them!
Clothes are a necessity-you’ve gotta wear ‘em whether you like it or not. Fortunately, they are also a perfect canvas for you to showcase your #NerdLife affiliations and various fandoms! Whether you’re on the market for gym apparel, outerwear, shirts for the office or just tops for every day, your Bro has you covered.
If you’ve got someone on your list who wants high-quality gear splashed with a subtle #NerdLife flare, Fangamer is a site you need to check out. The designs aren’t strikingly overt and they’re a welcome change of pace when juxtaposed with the offerings from big-box retailers. They’ve got plenty of shirts, hoodies, polos and tanks for both men and women printed on high-quality material, as well as a multitude of accessories such as key chains and magnets. They produce the best quality #NerdLife gear I’ve encountered, and I, my partner-in-crime and many of my Bros have our closets filled with their bevy of options. They’re the end-all-be-all of #NerdLife shirts. Just go look at their stuff now-for someone on your list or for yourself.
Lookhuman is a site my partner-in-crime absolutely adores. While the gear is a bit more “hip” than this Bro is accustomed to, there’s no denying they’ve got a plethora of unique and humorous offerings. The partner-in-crime has numerous tanks she uses for working out from here and a cute little Legend of Zelda mug, I’ll admit, I’m a big fan of. If you’re on the market for cutesy workout gear with an injection of #NerdLife, this is a site you need to scope.
Her Universe is a site which carries high-quality gear made specifically for the ladies. They’ve got jackets, shirts, dresses, sweaters-tons of gear which is good quality and allows you to proudly display your #Geekery allegiances. We first encountered them during out first visit to #SDCC, and since then the partner-in-crime has become a big fan of their offerings. I’m a big fan of the quality of their gear and the designs. Got a lady in your life who’s all about the #NerdLife? Be sure to check this place out!
Toys and Other Stuff
When it comes to toys you’ve got a multitude of places you can opt to spend your hard-earned change; admittedly, a majority of the toys we pick up are #SDCC exclusives. That being said, there are a number of sites we frequent for plush figures and a variety of other #NerdLife decorations. If you don’t want to pick up games or clothes for the Bros on your list, you’re bound to find something for them on these sites!
I’ve ordered polos, blankets, bottle openers, stickers, magnets, chargers, drinks, candy, stuffed animals-lots of stuff, from Thinkgeek. They have unique gear for the home, office, car, classroom and great outdoors-they’re essentially your one-stop shop for #NerdLife gear. If you’ve got someone on your list with even a passive interest in gaming, #NerdLife, #Geekery, fantasy shows, toys, pop culture-you cannot go wrong with spending a couple minutes skimming the plethora of offerings at Thinkgeek!
We Love Fine has a variety of designs affiliated with lesser-known properties (the only place I’ve been able to find anything related to Bee and Puppycat) as well as immediately recognizable characters. While I’m not the biggest fan of their t-shirts for guys (I prefer the style of shirt Fangamer prints on), I’ll happily show off my Puppycat, Catbug and Shovel Knight plushes I’ve picked up at various Cons this year. Got someone on your list who’s on the market for Steven Universe gear, or some other underrated show people should be watching, but aren’t? Swing by We Love Fine and odds are they’ll have something unique and appropriate.
A lot of holiday shopping guides are going to tell you what to get for the people on your list-this Bro isn’t down with that. You know your family and clan members better than anyone, and your boy isn’t going to arbitrarily tell you to get this cool Star Wars bottle opener when I don’t know the intricacies of the relationships you’ve forged with your loved ones over the years. What I will do, is tell you where you can find gear you might not find when you hit up the mall, and point you to retailers which are bound to have something for every person on your list who’s all about that #NerdLife. Here’s hoping the odds are in your favor when you’re shopping this holiday season. Until next time, Bros!
